Participation and the digital devide

Participation in the digital world is to have access to the Internet or digital devices. The digital divide is either an individual with access to the internet and digital devices or an individual that does not have access to the internet or digital devices. The digital divide may seem virtually non-existent to the majority of the world with digital access as with the growth over generations of the use of internet and digital devices the prices are lower and the access is more important.

I believe there are two prominent groups of people that don’t have access to the Internet. The First one being less fortunate countries; to a lot of individuals and country’s the internet is still not accessible. I was always aware that some less fortunate countries didn’t have access to digital world but never gave the issue much thought. The other prominent group of people I believe is the older generations, as a large number of them have also not gained access, as they don’t have the knowledge to use the technology, as it was virtually non-existent when they were growing up. With the younger generation who has access to the equipment and Internet growing up it is second nature to them to use it and gain further self taught advancements. Some individuals may also think that they don’t have a use for the Internet. Elderly people would have been introduced to digital technology from digital TVs and Radios in which they would see the impacts and advantages of using a device that is more updated and superior. There is also the issue of the price or though digital technology is affordable there are plenty of people in the world that don’t have the finances to venture into the digital world.

Digital identities and digital security

A digital identity is the way an individual portrays himself or herself online. This can be viewed from different social medias and Google. The first thing I have learnt about digital identities is there are two different ways in which an individual can portray himself or herself online.

1: Public

&

2: Private

This is the security in which each individual chooses when uploading photos, videos and text to the Internet. Each individual is responsible for majority of the information about him/her online. Or though there can be cases when information about someone can be uploaded by another person. I am currently looking into different ways to withhold information being shared by others about another. This task is proving to be a difficult one, as there is no barrier for an individual to submit content online about another. Downey advisises most information about an individual is uploaded voluntarily and”you lose rights in whatever you post as soon as you post it”(Sarah A. Downey, Blog, 2012). Downey shows ways to delete information from the internet. The deleting process seems to be time consuming and once it is done people can have the information saved, which I think is going to be a growing issue for future generations.

In these studies I have found just how important it is for everyone’s own security to make sure information uploaded to the Internet is private or ultimately not uploaded at all, as there can be certain predators online. These people being labelled as Identity thieves, scammers and online bullies. With children and young adolescence I believe the main predator encounter will be Bullies. Bullies are already a major problem online and they are only going to become worse in time unless children are educated on how to protect themselves online. I believe this is something all children should learn at school along with digital footprint (Vangie Beal, Digital Footprint, 2015) Children need to be aware that information uploaded to the internet ” leaves traces of personal information about yourself available to others online” and how everything on the Internet can be retraced even if deleted. 

What is a digital world?

A digital world is a progressing virtual existence. The first digital computer was invented in the 1930s outlined in (Computerhope, 2015) and since then the digital world has exploded and many people and businesses would be lost without it. A digital world according to (Howell, 2014), can be defined as a world where technology allows users to access information instantly, and globally via the internet. Furthermore, (Howell, 2014), suggests that within a digital world information is no longer local, but global and free of boundaries. This allows humans to move beyond their own society, and become active global citizens.The digital world is vital for education not only for the availability to study online, but also for the use of the Internet for study assistance. This gives the world the access to an immense quantity of online information. The amount of digital technology used everyday is expanding. The use of digital technology back in the 1930s was non-existent Shown in (Computerhope, 2015)  to most, but more recently this has changed, as the use of digital technologies has become very accessible and affordable to the majority of people.

A variety of different digital technologies and devices are used everyday by a wide variety of groups e.g. business use, personal use, communication, entrainment, and advertisement. I believe digital technologies in education are a major asset. I decided to do further research (Modern Teacher, 2014) and found information on what teachers in the field think about the impacts, advantages and disadvantages in the use of digital technologies in education today. I found this video(Modern Teacher, 2014) on YouTube and have gained some further knowledge on percentages of educators that feel digital technology is being used sufficiently, some think it could be used more and some don’t have access to the equipment.

The use of digital technology is important at school I believe, as it is heavily used in a lot of businesses. When students graduate school a vast majority will need further knowledge, training and support to use digital technology.On that thought I became interested in what negative impacts technology might have on a business. The only information I came across on this YouTube link(Out-Law Digital, 2014):

Which brought my attention to if the (Out-Law Digital, 2014) “digital technology and digital use is disrupting businesses today”. I believe that if the technology is used in an insufficient way it could lead to a negative impact due to there being many distractions with social media and the World Wide Web but if the technology is set up for a business’ individual purpose and needs that there will virtually be no negative impacts. As the internet and technology is only used as a way to benefit the company.

This digital teaching resource is appropriate for Teachers, Parents and students above year 5. Due to the context of language I believe it is more appropriate for more knowledgeable students.

The website should be used either individually or with the whole class. I believe if there were a topic being studied found on scoop it it would be informative to read through as a class or individually.

Which subject or learning area would it be most appropriate to use in?

For this particular website. I have found that there is content on any subject. The use of scoopit would be useful with any subject providing a wide range of information on all subjects.

The strengths of this teaching resource is the wide range of content on all subjects, the availably of the save button being able to come back and review readings as necessary and showing multiple views on a subject not just what was typed in search bar.

Identify any weaknesses of this teaching resource

One of the teaching weaknesses is there it is not appropriate for young children due to the language used younger children would not understand the content as it would be to complex.

Explain any ideas you may have for further use of this teaching resource

A use for this recourse is to scoop a few ideas on a topic and save them then review on a projector in class that way the students are able to have a visual and can also access at home if necessary.

I think pinterest is suitable for Teachers, Parents and students of all ages. Young age children may not be able to use the computer but if a teacher was to pin some appealing pictures for learning activities and show on a projector then this would be educational.

I believe it is suitable to be used individually and with the whole class.

I think that pinterest is a good tool for inspiration so it could be used in any subject such as art.

There is immense amount of content but more filtered then Google, there is a following system if another person has similar interests or following as a part of a group exercise.

There isn’t as much information on this website as there is on Google. People may use Google over this site.

I can think of many uses for this teaching resource.

1: Gaining Inspiration for set up of classroom, organising ideas and coming up with craft/art ideas.

2: There could be testing on pinterest where students could have to pin items to fit certain criteria.

3: Parents could use it for a source of information with assisting child with homework when further information is required.

4: Teacher could pin content for class to review for inspiration for a subject, assignment or test.
